Slate Shingle RoofSlate roof is considered to be one of the most prestigious and also expensive types of the roof to have. It is aesthetically pleasing and extremely durable. Slate has been used for centuries as a roofing material lasting for decades and creating distinctive roofs, which sustain hard weather conditions. Properly installed, slate roofs require little to no maintenance and will last 50 to 90 years or even longer depending on the grade of the slate used and structure of the roof. It is not uncommon for slate roof to last in excess of 100 years. Slate roofs are about 3 times heavier than asphalt shingles and, thus, the roof structure must be strong enough to sustain additional weight.

Slate comes in a wide variety of colors, textures and grades. Slate installation is a very complicated and relatively slow process requiring the top professionals in roofing industry, which usually leads to very expensive labour cost. In addition, because of the slate weight special handling equipment is required and delivery charges will add to the cost.
