4 Signs Your Roof Needs A Repair

A sturdy and stable roof is essential to make you and your family feel safe and protected from the elements while at home. Yet, it is one of the most overlooked parts of the house, and any wear and tear is usually not addressed in until there is a leakage or some other obvious sign of damage.

So how can you identify when your roof needs repair without having to wait until it’s too late and needs urgent fixing?

  • Minimal leakage in the attic

Usually the attic contains items that you stopped using a long time ago, and may have even forgotten that they’re packed up there. However, there may be a couple of items there that you don’t want damaged. So, if you spot any areas with ice buildup or water staining, it means that there is a leakage in your roof caused by a problem in your flashing or poor shingle underlayment. Identify the cause of the leakage and get it fixed.

  • Blistering paint or stains

It is easy to spot areas of excessive cracking on the exterior of a painted surface by simply walking the perimeter of your house. These spots are usually caused by poor ventilation, allowing a lot of moisture to get trapped in attic spaces instead of dispersing like normal. Growth of mould and mildew along the interior ceiling lines could also indicate poor ventilation and a need for roof repair.

  • Damaged shingles

There are many warning signs you can get from your shingles, including cracks, curls, tears, blisters, and loose or missing shingles, all of which indicate that they have reached their lifespan and should be repaired or replaced.

At this stage, shingles also have a “dirty” look, and have started to lose their protective coat of granules, which is yet another sign of their age and need for replacement. You will notice a large number of granules at the base of your gutters after normal or heavy downpour.

  • High energy bills

Although a faulty roof is not the only cause of increased energy bills, it certainly plays a big role in your home’s energy efficiency. Roof issues can affect proper air circulation and ventilation, allowing hot air to get trapped. This in turn causes your AC to run longer at lower temperatures during hot weather. In winter, cold air gets trapped, increasing your heating bills.

Get help from an experienced professional

There are many potential dangers associated with not getting your roof inspected and serviced by a professional at least once a year, like plywood decking damage, drywall damage leading to more costly repairs, mould that is harder to eradicate, and property value depreciation. To avoid such risks, it is important to get an annual preventative maintenance inspection of your roofing system and get any problems fixed in a timely manner.
