5 Tips For Choosing The Right Colour For Your Roof

Whether you’re considering installing slate, metal, or asphalt shingles, there are many factors to consider when picking the colour scheme for your roofing materials. There are very many choices to pick from, especially when you consider that each shingle colour option comes in a range of shades and colour combinations.

Take your time to consider these tips, as you will have to live with your decision for the next couple of decades or more.

  1. Dark versus light roof colours

This is mostly a concern when considering roof heat retention. A recent study revealed that black shingles were 10 degrees warmer compared to an identical white-shingled roof during a hot day, but the difference between other shades (browns and greys) was minimal.

  2. Consider your brick colour

It is important to bear in mind that bricks are permanent, while paint and shutter colours can be easily changed. When comparing sample shingle colours, start with the brick, and then move to the paint or siding colours.

  3. Consider exterior paint colours

Choosing the colour of your roof should be the final step when changing the exterior look of your home. So, if you intend to change the outside colour of your house, make sure that you compare the roofing or shingle samples with the new paint colour, as well as with any permanent colours in your home’s exterior.

  4. Tone down with a simple roofing colour

It is a basic rule to pick a toned-down roofing colour if your home has a combination of colours, such as stone facades, multicolour bricks, or multiple exterior paint colours. Having too many colours and patterns can overwhelm the eyes. Creating a monotone feel, on the other hand, can give your home remarkable curb appeal.

  5. Consider your home and neighbourhood style

Assess the style of your home, as well as the choice of roofing in other homes in your neighbourhood. This is important to ensure that you select a colour and shingle style that is not only appropriate for your home’s style, but also complements your neighbour’s homes. This is particularly important if you intend to sell your home later on.

Lastly, take some time to talk with your roofing estimator. An experienced roofer has seen and probably performed numerous roofing jobs, and can offer good advice regarding the most ideal colours for your home’s structure and exterior style. Remember, it is easier to change the roof than the siding, so take your time to ensure that the roofing colour you pick does not contrast the siding and trim.
